Ardmore, PA – The Lower Merion Aces overcame a sluggish start to pick up a hard-fought 40-28 District I second round victory over visiting Council Rock South on Tuesday evening at Bala Cynwyd Middle School. With the victory, the Aces improve to 22-2 on the season and advance to the quarterfinal round of District I play on Saturday afternoon. The victory also gives Lower Merion an automatic bid into the PIAA state tournament which is the fourth state bid in the last five years for the Aces.
Trailing 17-12 with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter, LM used a 13-0 run behind nine points from senior guard Molly Hanlon to end the half with a 25-17 lead. The Aces’ stifling defense caused eight second quarter turnovers and held the Golden Wings scoreless for almost five minutes. Hanlon’s second three-point field goal of the game with 4:10 on the clock gave the Aces’ their first lead of the night at 19-17.
In the victory, Hanlon led all scorers with a game-high 19 points including four three-point field goals on the night. She also tallied four steals, three rebounds and one block in the win. Fellow classmate Amy Woods finished the game with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Aces while junior Kiki Worku chipped in with six points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks. The backcourt duo of Sheba Hall and Lil Carney each chipped in two points in the win for the Aces.
