The Aces led wire-to-wire in an efficient 65-51 victory against Strath Haven on Saturday afternoon. LM led by as many as 18 in the third quarter and held a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half. With the win, the Aces improve to 14-4 (11-2 CL) on the season. The Panthers fall to 7-11 (5-8 CL).
Greg Robbins led all scorers with 22 points (5-5 FT). Carl Johnson (17 points, 6 assists), Harley Williamson (11 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks), Steve Meehan (8 points, 4 rebounds), Eric Stahler (5 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and Andrew King (2 points) rounded out the scoring. Lower Merion shot 51% (20-39) from the field.
The win was marked by aggressive play on both ends of the floor. The Aces attacked the rim in transition and capitalized at the free throw line, shooting 19-24 for the game. Defensive highlights included a successful charge taken by Stahler and several diving floor burns by Meehan and Johnson. On one play, four Aces hit the floor to collect a loose ball. The Aces held a speedy Strath Haven club to zero fastbreak points on the afternoon.
Saturday’s contest marked the Aces’ first look at Calvin Newell in a Strath Haven uniform. Newell, a transfer from Ridley, scored 19 points and was the only Panthers player in double figures.
The Aces return to action on Wednesday evening at 6 PM at Conestoga. Lower Merion is seeking revenge against the Pioneers, who handed the Maroon & White their first loss of the season back in December.
