The Aces' react after pulling out a hard-fought victory against Conestoga on Saturday night
The Aces pulled out a gritty 46-43 overtime victory against Conestoga on Saturday to begin the New Year on a positive note.
Lower Merion led for most of the game, but the Pioneers made a late run in the fourth quarter to force an extra frame. In overtime, Mike Robbins '12 gave the Aces a working margin, scoring four straight points on a free throw and three-pointer. LM connected on eight of ten free throws down the stretch to seal the outcome.
Oliver Cohen '10 led the Aces with 14 points, including a clutch three-pointer in the fourth quarter after Conestoga had taken its first lead since the opening minutes. Aaron Staley '11 scored ten points and had a season-high five blocked shots. Robbins and Matt McKenna '11 finished with eight points apiece. David Ancona-Cole '10 (2 points), Luke Chambers '11 (2 points), JJ Hoffstein '10 (1 point) and Conor Foote '10 (1 point) rounded out the scoring.
The Aces led by six at halftime and by as many as nine in the second half before Conestoga began to chip away. Foul trouble kept McKenna and Robbins off the floor for major stretches of the third and fourth quarters, slowing the Aces' attack. LM once again hung its hat on tough defense, limiting the Pioneers to 16 first-half points and a season-low 35 points in regulation.
Staley delivered another strong performance on the interior, altering shots and scoring in a variety of ways. He was on the receiving end of several nifty feeds from Cohen, who led the team with five assists.
The win improves' the Aces record to 4-0 in the Central League. Next up is a showdown at home against Haverford on Tuesday, 1/5. Tip-off is 7:30 PM.
