The Aces used an 18-3 third quarter run to break open a tight game and cruised to a 61-47 victory against Conestoga.
Darryl Reynolds '12 had a dominant night on both ends of the floor, netting a game-high 18 points and collecting 10 rebounds and 5 blocks.
LM controlled play in the first quarter, but couldn't shake a determined Pioneers squad. The Aces missed several shots from close range and Conestoga converted six points on offensive rebounds to keep things close at 13-9. The second frame was nip and tuck, with both teams exchanging baskets early. After the Pioneers took their only lead of the game at 18-17, the Aces countered immediately with a jumper from Reynolds. Bryce Williamson '12 knocked down a big three of the bench to give LM a five-point lead at 26-21. As the half came to a close, and with the Pioneers back within three, BJ Johnson '13 hit a deep trey at the buzzer to give LM a 30-24 edge.
The third quarter opened in much the same way as the first half, with both teams struggling to score in the early going. But Conestoga would begin to wilt against some of LM's best defensive pressure of the season. Backcourt mates JaQuan Johnson '14 and Raheem Hall '13 harassed the Pioneers' guards and forced consecutive turnovers, leading to two easy layups. Suddenly, the Aces had a ten point lead and they were just getting started. LM forced four more turnovers and limited the Pioneers to one made basket in the period. Meanwhile, Reynolds went to work in the paint, scoring in a variety of ways and controlling the defensive glass. When the dust settled, the Aces had pushed the lead to 21 points heading into the final quarter.
With a comfortable margin established, LM seemed content to trade baskets in the final frame. The Pioneers played gamely, but never threatened. The final margin was the closest they'd get after the Aces' third quarter barrage. With the win, LM improves to 17-2 (13-0 CL). Conestoga drops to 12-6 (9-4).
Friday was an important win for the Aces against a quality opponent playing some of their best basketball of late. LM seemed to relish the opportunity and responded in impressive fashion when challenged. The Aces will need to keep it up as they face a stretch of tough league tests in the coming days. On Tuesday, they'll hit the road to take on Haverford at 7:30 PM.
