The Aces opened the New Year with a bang, crushing Marple Newtown 73-47 on Tuesday night. Steve Pendleton ’15 led the way with a career-high 15 points and added seven rebounds and four steals in an impressive all-around performance. JaQuan Johnson ’14 (11 points) and Corey Sherman ’15 (10 points) also reached double figures. Ten Aces entered the scoring column and all players in uniform saw action.
LM had waited more than a week to return to the court after an impressive win over Delaware’s top-ranked team, Sanford School at the Pete & Jameer Nelson Classic. The Aces looked hungry for action and eager to prove that the last game of 2013 was a portent of things to come.
Up 16-11 after the first frame, LM outscored the Tigers 24-6 in a decisive second quarter run marked by smothering defense. Johnson and Pendleton set the tone with serious backcourt heat. The tandem collected steals on three consecutive possessions, leading to two transition hoops and a three-pointer from Jule Brown ’15. Justin McFadden ’14 locked down the interior, swatting three of his team-high five blocks in the quarter.
LM extended the lead to as many as 41 points in the second half behind strong play from reserves Adrian Levitt ’14, KJ Helton ’16, Myles McGregor ’16, Oliver Henry ’14 and Dave “Bearcat” Baer ‘14.
The Aces look to continue their winning ways at home against Strath Haven on Friday night. Tip-off is 7:30 PM.
